The Philippines

Nathan Beck and Daniel Beck Scuba Diving

Dan and I worked SO hard while he was in china, we needed a break! We took our break in the Philippines in a tiny little beach town near Puerto Galera. It was a great place, one of my favorites so far. Everyone speaks English, the food is great (they have western style ice cream), it has beaches, mountains, jungles, and time doesn't mean much of anything. Add scuba diving, motorcycles, ziplines, and a super hurricane and you have the perfect adventure.

We took a plane to Manila where we met my friend Charles. He is in Manila for ...

I love food

Street Food booths at Beijing Street in Guangzhou China

Sometimes I get so tired of the food here (the lack of good meat), but yesterday I was in food paradise. It wasn't planned, it just happened. I ended up eating at least five really good meals. I was meeting some friends at Beijing Lu and they were having a street food festival. There was booth after booth of (mostly) good street food. Lots of new things to try.

I am frequently surprised by the food I eat but yesterday I had the best surprise yet. We were walking past all the booths and one booth had these yellow ...

Metro station in Guangzhou China

I am still amazed by the number of people in Guangzhou. I have gotten used to most everything but I am shocked whenever I get to the metro and see this in the entry hallway. Thankfully not every metro stop is like this all the time, but a lot of the metro stations are like this for at least a few hours every day. When it is really busy, like above, there are police officers standing on platforms at the hallway intersections directing traffic. I don't know how but it works fairly smoothly somehow. You would think I would ...

It rains too much in Guangzhou

The last couple of weeks have been uneventful. I guess that really means I am used to Guangzhou and I don't see things that surprise me anymore, other than the rain of course. I didn't know it was possible to rain so much. I don't know how guangzhou doesn't flood, but it has rained almost all day every day for the last few days and the water still finds someplace to go. The above picture is from my balcony, it is impossible to really show the rain in a picture, but it was coming down hard ...

Bungee jump tower baiyun mountain Guangzhou

I went bungee jumping a couple weeks ago at Baiyun Mountain. I had wanted to go for a while, but going by myself would be no fun and there aren't a lot of people willing to go bungee jumping. I can't figure out why??? My friend 米莉 (Mili) said she also wanted to go so we had to wait for a weekend when we were both in town. We thought the bungee tower was on the north side of the mountain, so we took a bus there to find out it was on the south side so we ...

Temple at the Grand Palace in Bangkok Thailand

The last destination of the two week trip was Bangkok. We were in Bangkok for 3 days. It was just enough time to see everything we wanted. Every few kilometers there is a Buddhist temple. All of the temples are over the top and gaudy (and very touristy). It was impressive, but also a bit disgusting when you think about the living conditions in the rest of this developing country. We spent the first day in Bangkok visiting different temples, palaces, and museums in the city. The above picture and the below picture were both taken at the temple at ...

Phuket & Koh Phi Phi

The islands just off Phi Phi Island (the ones with maya beach)

We left Singapore and headed to Phuket Island in Thailand. It felt strange going from such a wealthy city to Thailand, such a huge contrast of lifestyles and wealth. Phuket was a great relaxed place. It is a fairly large island and our hotel was in one of the towns on the island, not near anything very interesting. We rented some scooters from our hotel to get around the island. I really LOVE riding scooters or motorcycles or any small vehicle around places, especially places with crazy driving habits. I thought people in China drove crazy, but Phuket was more ...

Singapore Skyline from Marina bay sands hotel

After Malaysia it was off to Singapore. Malaysia was so great that Singapore was hard pressed to match it. Singapore is one of the cleanest cities in the world, it was very refreshing to be in a clean western city where everyone speaks English and I could drink the tap water (I really miss drinking tap water). Getting around Singapore is extremely easy, the metro system is almost perfect. It helps that the entire country is just one packed city on a small island so there isn't much area the metro needs to cover. We spent three days in ...

Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur

The first stop on my travels this summer was Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. What an amazing city. I already miss it. We flew from Guangzhou to Kuala Lumpur, it was a short 4 hour flight. We spent the first night at the Petronas towers. WOW, they are the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen. I thought we would see them then get on hour way but we spent at least 4 hours walking around them and sitting in a park just outside the towers watching fountains. Getting around Kuala Lumpur is difficult, the metro is terrible and confusing, but ...

New Apartment!

The grounds of my new apartment complex in Guangzhou

I finally moved out of the terrible place I was living. I have been living in the new place for a couple days now and I LOVE IT. Usually I hate moving, and hate any new place for a couple weeks no matter how good it is but not this time. This new place is a huge improvement over the third world accommodations I was staying in before, so no regrets.

I moved in with some Colombian friends. They are great roommates (very quiet). The place is a little dirty, but that is expected. My bedroom is bigger than my ...
